What I don't think they're understanding is the issue isn't just that research does not equate to first hand experience (which it doesn't). The publishing industry has long favoured stories about white people, forcing BIPOC people to write stories where they're not represented
More than that, publishing pften pays white writers more and, as we have seen with certain releases like American D**t, we're also guilty of sometimes taking away stories that belong to other people.
Until BIPOC are given equal opportunities in publishing it isn't about 'but they've done their research why can't they?' (and let's be clear, I still don't agree research is the same as lived experience).
(sorry first tweet in thread didn't actually link but it's still up)
And to add (since I'm stubborn and just can't drop a subject) suggesting co-authoring with BIPOC is a terrible suggestion that is bound to lead to people just being asked to put their name to something that another person wrote, just to lend it authenticity. Nope. Bad plan.
