Virtual summer school has been quite an adventure. Bridge building unit integrating math and science. Social issues unit using picture books to explore current social issues. Really got to build my virtual teaching skills.
Let the Children March has been a powerful mentor text. We use Epic to do shared reading. We have explored tough topics of unpacking privilege, racism, and the actions of the police on certain groups. We were shocked to learn that children as young as 6 years old marched.
These children who marched in Birmingham 1963 were fire hosed, arrested, and had police dogs attack them. We began to explore power and which groups exert power. What groups are we a part of?
If children as young as 6 could march, our children can handle and should have the space to have honest conversations about racism, privilege, and systemic racism. Then, we can tackle how to dismantle the system.
I cannot help but wonder and reflect. Are we teaching our Ss what really matters? Civic education at a younger age has been on my heart lately. Why wait for our Ss to be change makers? Let's get it started now!
