Since they'll overwise be unable to fund promised strike pay, @ucu is taking the "extraordinary measure" of assessing each member a £15 "levy", via direct bank account debit. This in spite of the fact that "union has never levied members before".👇 1/ https://www.ucu.org.uk/levy-questions
GS @DrJoGrady's underlined justification for the levy👇is a piece of misleading spin. It's not on account of "tremendous victories", local or national, that the strike fund needs bailing out. Rather, it's on account of 22 days of national strikes that ended in failures. 2/
The role of the 8+14=22 days in 2019-20 in depleting the fund is made clear here👇. 3/
The failure of 22 days over pay & equalities is made clear by @ucu's recommendation of rejection of @UCEA1's offer on precarity, workload & pay equality plus the fact that our pay is 0.2% lower (see👇) than could have been achieved by autumn settlement. 4/

The failure of 22 #USS strike days against @USSEmployers is made clear by the fact that members could have achieved an autumn settlement on 9.1%👇rather than current 9.6% member contributions… 5/

…plus agreement with @USSEmployers in November, in exchange for calling off strikes, on the three items that some are now trying to spin as "big wins"👇in spite of the unnecessary cost of 22 days of strikes. 6/ https://twitter.com/MikeOtsuka/status/1263854929757769729
Nobody would have agreed to 22 days of strikes if they had known in advance that they would yield no demonstrable gains & be at the cost of lower pay & higher #USS contributions than they could have secured via pre-strike settlements. 7/
Those who are now leading @ucu need to candidly acknowledge the extent of the failures of these 22 days, HEC's strategic misjudgements in calling them & their failures to properly consult the wider membership on the extent of the strike action called. 8/
If they don't, they will have a hard time convincing a majority of members to cast postal strike ballots in the coming year, thereby giving HEC carte blanche to call them out for further prolonged strikes for illusory gains. 9/9
