Re:Zero definitely surpassed my expectations. Loved it from start to finish. Great character piece with perfectly executed themes and genius use of it's own premise. It's was the first isekai anime that I was able to enjoy so it felt like a breath of fresh air.
The captivating and engaging plot kept me invested in the story through the whole runtime of the show. The way it's able to present and explore themes like human connection and the importance of the other person is just extraordinary. And all that in interesting fantasy world.
But everything wouldn't be so great without the main protagonist. Subaru is filled with many negative emotions such as guilt or hatred, he's just overall a very flawed character but that's what makes him so good, it makes him human. He perfectly fits in the thematics of Re:Zero.
Honestly I have to give a shout out to the cast as a whole. Every character that had a bit of screentime was somehow interesting. Main heroine, Emilia was nearly as good as Subaru. They are both damaged characters and their dynamic is just beautiful. Same actually goes for Rem.
Oh, Rem... even though I prefer Emilia, the blue haired maid was great too. Her and her sister backstory really hit. Lots of scenes with main focus on her did that. Also the 13-18 episode stretch was something I can call peak anime. Greatness.
Aside from weak CGI crowds the visual presentation and production quality were also really good. Animation was consistent, backgrounds were beautiful, OST was solid and sound design was perfect. Everything helped to nail the atmosphere in that fantastic setting.
