Underrepresented minorities have less access to sponsorship. By sharing detailed recognition of skills with examples benchmarked to career ladders, we can scaffold footholds for micro-sponsorship.

Will you join me to sponsor someone today?

I want you to think of someone you worked with recently —someone who did something helpful, impressive, or someone who guided you to achieve something yourself.

Maybe someone whose work stands out, or maybe someone whose work has become a reliable part of your team's routine.
Right now, I want you to write a single sentence about what they did.

Maybe it looks something like this:
"Sam helped me write tests for our new fluffy puppy feature."
Tell me more!
• What impact did that have on you or your team?
• Do you have quotes/metrics?
• How would your work be different if they hadn't worked with you?

"Sam taught our team a new way to write tests, which increased our test coverage 15% while delivering on schedule."
Think about the bigger picture of they change your team over time.

How would you convince them that they are making a difference to you, your team, or the business?

“Sam regularly teaches our team new approaches that improve our team’s delivery velocity.”
If you have a career ladder or skill matrix, use specific language to describe their work.

“Sam’s deep expertise in dog grooming enabled our team to address hairy situations by anticipating the knowledge we would need, leading us to cut short our problem-solving challenges.”
We want to write a gauge to measure the growth of our colleague — but more importantly, we want to identify explicit criteria we can use to benchmark their skills so they will be fairly rewarded in performance reviews and promotions.
This is especially important for underrepresented minorities, who receive disproportionate criticism and private appreciation.

URM have less access to sponsorship. With exercises like this, we can scaffold footholds for micro-sponsorship across the industry.
“Sam’s dog-grooming expertise enabled us to overcome hairy situations. They anticipate needs & teach new approaches, improving delivery velocity & expanding problem-solving skills. Their testing methods increased coverage 15% while delivering a new feature: shaggy dog stories!”
I'm sorry.
