In the transition to #virtualconference platforms, the audience is no longer captive and #scicomm must evolve to be more dynamic and viewer friendly. @MCRI_for_kids @RCHMelbourne @ISSCR @UniMelbscicomm @StemCellsUoM @UniMelbMDHS @AusStemCell @KidneyCathy (1/9)
Just finished my #virtualposter session (as a spectator) at @ISSCR #ISSCR2020 and find it amazing that many, if not most, have not altered their formatting or presentation AT ALL for the new platform. Below are some tips. The #NephJC crew will have some thoughts too.(2/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 1:
People will not wander past your poster. The only thing you have to attract people is your title! Including well selected key words that can be found on a [Ctrl-F] search of a webpage will make sure you get the visitors you want. (3/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 2:
DON'T WRITE PARAGRAPHS IN SIZE 8 FONT! This is infuriating enough in face-to-face poster halls but now you have the opportunity to pre-record your 5 min presentation, it makes sense to remove all text and leave the more visually appealing figures. (4/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 3:
Try to sound interested and dynamic in your presentation. We can't see you so advertise with your voice!! Summarise your poster (including the conclusions) in the first 20 secs. If you don't grab me in that time, I'll click out and move on. (5/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 4:
Describe your poster carefully so I can follow you. Use terms like 'In the top-left panel...' and 'The green colour in the IF image is...' Some have done this VERY well and others poorly. I know almost nothing about your research. Bring me along! (6/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 5:
Supply your photo, email, twitter handle and a QR code to your webpage, publications, more information on your project. This is more important than ever given how immediately I can link to you given I'm already online. (7/9)
#Virtualposter hall tip 6:
It goes without saying that should be online when your session is on to answer questions. The amazing benefit is that you can now interact with other posters whilst answering questions on your own - so there's no excuse! (8/9)
The same goes for the Exhibitors. What two things do consumers want to know when they walk into an exhibitor space? What have you got and HOW MUCH IS IT!! No longer can exhibitors distract with showy sets and be coy on $$$. Show me what I want straight up or I'm moving on. (9/9)
