this thread sparked a thought from me but im shy anyway i think that part of the issue is that there are two different forms of cancel culture - mainstream and fandom - with fandom's being a horrible distortion of the already error-prone original "mainstream" form-- https://twitter.com/Cushfuddled/status/1276301166024900608
--people who make these posts often literally don't know or care about the pdphile-mass-hysteria that's going on in fandom. they're talking about cancelculture as applied to CELEBRITIES, most often "cancelling" celebrities who are proven REAL predators or UNREPENTANT bigots--
--most of the time, anyway, there are bad misfires but they don't happen with the same CONSTANT character-assassination accuracy of the FANDOM branch of cancel culture... which is why they downplay it. MOST of the time, to my knowledge, celebrity cancelculture legitimately is--
--just backlash from being uncovered as an actual IRL predator/constant bigot, which is why people who only care about those real-world people and aren't in the fandom scene (understandable) see people who ARE mostly in fandom, talking about how cancelculture is--
--absolutely horrible for them, and thinking "well... they must have done something REALLY BAD, so no sympathy". Mainstream cancelculture is amplified backlash towards bigots and abusers (MORE OFTEN) - fandom cancelculture is an abuse weapon used by indoctrinated young adults--
--to silence and attempt to kll small queer creators/survivors/literally just random people minding their business over a manufactured "crime". it's putting the cult back in cancelculture to say the least. but since BOTH are referred to with the same broad brush of--
--"cancel culture" - anyone who isn't ACTIVELY IN FANDOM, for whatever reason they might have, does not have a single clue what the hell is happening in fandom's diseased branch of internet outrage. they think someone afraid of being harassed to deat-h over a fucking cat ship--
--is ACTUALLY bemoaning "the internet overreacting" to discovering people in positions of power, often non-marginalized, have been preying on others or spreading vile bigotry for years and years in secret. They're two different problems that need to stop being categorized--
--as the same phenomenon for this reason. One of them is about trying to keep celebrities accountable for harming real live people, and the other is about trying to harm real live people for writing stories that make people feel emotions they don't want to feel--
--and continuing to pretend they're one and the same is, I feel, honestly keeping people in fandom from getting any kind of outside help with which to deal with its growing, horrific abuse problem. The non-fandoms think we're a pack of whiny antisj-s when in reality--
--our communities are being burned to the ground from the inside by indoctrinated young people seemingly perpetuating a cycle of abuse and being *widely rewarded* for it by their peers & by non-fandoms who just assume The Kids Are Always Doing Good. /thread
