Neil Degrasse Tyson posted something earlier on alien designs and how they should be VERY different looking than life on earth, which is a pount I wish was taken up more by illustrators and films. (Thread)
Sure life could evolve independently (assuming evolution even functions in a way that’s like on earth, but that’s a whole other post), and develop similar traits. But that similarity would be pretty superficial at most
For instance (I’m using some of my creatures). These guys developed “eyes” and “legs”, however their structure and the way they work is unlike that of, say, a tetrapod.
Imma give out a list of books and projects that truly pushed for practical weirdness in alien world building.
Starting off with the arguable father, or spark for this whole realm of art. Wayne Barlowe’s Expedition REALLY influenced a whole generation of artists following him and the project, and boy was it a piece of gold
@alexriesart and his Birrin project are also filled with eye catching art and wonderful designs (these were hugely influential in making my designs as I was developing my art)
Note some of the similarities with organisms on earth, however them still being unrecognizable to Terran life
@cmkosemen and his Snaiad project are also pretty well known now I’d assume for the great art that makes them up as well as the weird anatomy on these guys
