I’m a black girl whose been watching YouTube since elementary/middle school and I’ve been a fan of Jenna Marbles for years. I see a lot of fans who are sad to see her go (just like I am) but are missing the point of her video. (1/?)
She made a mistake a long time ago, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t need to address it. Black face is VERY SERIOUS AND EXTREMELY DAMAGING AND DEHUMANIZING. I was only 11 years old when I saw that Nicki Minaj video and so many other videos like it. (2/?)
11 years old and I understood there was nothing I could do and my feelings were extremely hurt but I just had to move on because black face, racism, and anti-blackness were so common and normal in comedy/YouTube. I understand that a lot of time has passed and I know Jenna (3/?)
has changed, I’m a huge fan of her and Julien’s channel! I’m still heartbroken about the thought of never seeing a new video. But it’s a disservice to Jenna and the work she’s doing, and a disservice to black kids like me who had to see those videos, to only be talking (4/?)
about how she doesn’t deserve this and cancel culture is toxic. I’m seeing A LOT of white people expressing THEIR thoughts, feelings, etc. over this and not enough acknowledgement that this video WAS NEEDED, because time doesn’t necessarily equate an apology. (5/?)
It’s important for people like Jenna to show that she made mistakes, she regrets them, and she’s changed so that we can ALL see black face is not ok or acceptable. People (white people especially) are grouping everyone (6/?)
who is expressing the need for videos like this as “hate, toxic, and cancel culture”. I have no doubt that Jenna has received unfair or harsh treatment by some people, and I’m sure most people who want accountability from influencers don’t think that’s right or that Jenna (7/?)
should leave YouTube. But it doesn’t mean the many people who are asking for an explanation/apology in a respectful way are wrong. Saying Jenna got bullied off of YouTube isn’t fair to her and the message she’s putting out, or to black people who constantly have to let go (8/?)
things because “it was a long time ago”. I’m not saying you can’t be upset over her leaving YouTube, I am too and I wish she would stay. But she made a decision to take a break and we have to respect that and not dismiss the great progress and work she’s done as a result of (9/?)
bullying and cancel culture. People really need to take into consideration this message because black people and their thoughts/acceptance over Jenna’s apology are being drowned out and it doesn’t seem right for their position to not take priority in this situation. (10/?)
Again, I don’t want Jenna to leave or receive any form of hate but I won’t allow for white people to act like black face is not a big deal (they are the problem). Jenna has grown so much and her video/actions show that. This is why she’ll always be my favorite youtuber. (11/11)
If @Jenna_Marbles sees this thread: your video was genuine and clear, I know you’ve changed. your channel means more to me then you’ll ever know. you’ve helped me through hard times, and I hope you know we’ll miss you and you can always come back.

1. the video was a white person with over-tanned skin, who also but on dark green/black face makeup(?) to impersonate the hulk when joking about a black woman. context matters and though it wasn’t Jenna’s intention, there was an impact. research and understand why this isn’t ok
2. I’m not saying that for Jenna, who STATED SHE UNDERSTAND THIS AND HAS APOLOGIZED AND CHANGED. I’m saying this for all the people who don’t see why the apology was needed.
3. Yes, there are so many other youtubers who DESERVE to leave the platform, you know who I’m talking about. black people have been saying this for years, and people/fans haven’t listened. It’s not our fault they haven’t listened, DONT use that to dismiss Jenna’s good points
4. Jenna didn’t get bullied off. no one (at least that I’ve seen/the majority) has asked her to leave. many are saying the video was great but we wish she would stay. she chose to leave for her own reasons, and I really hope she knows she can come back. but that’s her decision
5. ALSO, AT BEST, the Nicki Minaj video was a racist caricature of her/black women. it’s undeniable the video was not ok. again, not for Jenna who already knows and handled this. I’m saying this to those who don’t think it’s a problem
6. Jenna has realized and accepted that she was wrong. If you disagree, you’re going against HER OWN MESSAGE and those who expressed hurt. It’s not about whether she was wrong (she already established that), it’s about her holding herself accountable (like she already did)
7. If you’re not effected by her old videos, it’s not your place to forgive her on this PERIOD! I can only speak for myself so don’t think I represent everyone who her apology was for
