The Strange Beauty of Some Rap Songs: An In-Depth Analysis of Earl Sweatshirt’s 3rd Studio Album (RTs Appreciated ❤️)
Some Rap Songs is one of the most polarizing albums on this platform. Its instrumentals and Earl’s monotone voice has turned many listeners away from the record. On the other hand, it expanded Earl’s growing fanbase and is considered to be his best project to date.
This album can be described as a sonic representation of severe depression. Earl keeps a steady monotone voice throughout the record, representing emptiness. Feeling “empty” is something that many people diagnosed with a form of depression feel.
Another example of it’s representation of depression can be found in the track “Red Water”. In it, he repeats the same 9 lines over and over. Another symptom of depression is ruminating thoughts, continously thinking the same thing over and over again.
The 12th track, Veins, can be seen as a follow-up to Earl’s EP, Solace. Veins revisits the same themes he talked about in Solace. This time, however, his mind is in a significantly better state.
Solace: “You could see it in my face, I ain’t been eatin”
Veins: “I’ve been eating good, you can see it in my tummy”

Solace: “Looks like the way River Phoenix went gon’ end up my fate”
Veins: “I ain’t touch a xan . . .”
River Phoenix was a popular actor in the 1990’s that became famous at a young age and, as a result, dabbled in drugs like Earl. This led to his death. In Solace, Earl is saying that his use of drugs could be the end of him. In Veins, he’s saying that he’s quit using hard drugs.
“Flushin through the pain, depression this is not a phase” - Line from Peanut

The entire album is about Earl attempting to overcome his depression. In the track “Nowhere2go”, he talks about finding comfort in his friends and trying out new coping skills.
In the track “Playing Possum”, he finds comfort in his family. In the track “Azucar”, he talks about gaining the strength to finally overcome his demons. So why would he put the aforementioned line near the end of the album?
Depression is not something that most people will fully overcome, no matter how hard they try. It sticks with you for life. Ultimately, the best thing you can do is find your solace in the people around you and develop healthy coping methods. That’s the message of the album.
