The inherent problem with occupying an online space is it becomes increasing harder to do one of the most important parts of growing up - fucking up.

I began online life as a shitty edgelord, making up for a lack of personality by trying so hard to be funny & frequently resorting to shock - racist, transphobic, sexist etc.
I'd claim "just jokes" but I was just lazy & frankly a fucking idiot. I look back at this time in shame

Fortunately for the most part those sites are gone, and I basically escaped any kind of rightful call out. Then over the course of 15-20 years, I grew up. I fell into the right crowds. I educated myself.
I gained awareness of things like BLM, like trans rights, like feminism etc.

I changed for the better and I am proud of who I am. But it took a long time & the road is paved with fuck-ups.
With the increasing permanency of social media, it's harder for some to escape the public spectacle of their shitty past. And now we're witnessing people weaponising it

To be clear, this doesn't invalidate things being rightfully called out. But consider when those occurred and who they are now.
A person who tweets a shitty edgy joke in 2010 might no longer reflect who that person is now in 2020. People can and do change (& some do not ofc)

Cancel culture is necessary. We need to deplatform the racists and the bigots, who use their platform to bully, harass and harm marginalised groups.
But right now, in-fighting does nothing but lose good people, and god fucking knows we need all the help we can get right now.

People can & will fuck-up. It's part of growing up. They'll say the wrong things but it'll be up in public viewing for all to see forever.
But with an open mind and an open heart, people can change with awareness, growth & listening.
Judge someone as they are, not who they were
