By popular demand (ok, my mom), welcome to Amalie’s Guide to Navigating Publishing & Other Escape Rooms.

1) Be humble. Up one day & down the next is kind of par for the course here.
2) Be your own advocate. No one knows you & your stories like you do. Stand up and stand proud.
3) Speak up for what you need/want/dislike, but be willing to learn. Others are experts in their fields for a reason.
4) Treasure the friends you have. People aren’t tissues. Don’t be that guy who needs better friends because you’ve “arrived.” That’s just not cool, bruh (see #6).
5) Help others where you can. It’s just a decent thing to do. What goes around comes around, and that goes for good things, too. Especially help and support creators from marginalized communities. They need you. And don’t do it to win points, do it because you’re a good human.
6) Don’t be a dirtbag. Don’t gaslight. Don’t bad-mouth (especially on the Internet but just don’t - I always tell my kids, those “bad” words? They’re yours, no one else’s - they came out of you). Also, what goes around comes around, times three, according to the witch’s code.
7) Be grateful for your opportunities and for the people who help you get those opportunities. Small things can lead to bigger things. Acknowledge when someone says or does something nice for you. Manners aren’t hard, even on social media platforms where a like goes a long way.
8) Don’t give up, if/when you’re told no. It just means that might not be the right place or opportunity for you. Stay the course. Your stories deserve to be told and to be heard. You deserve to be seen.
Where there’s a will, there is a way. Keep improving your craft.
9) Be open to new people, new ideas, and new experiences. That’s how we get better at adulting and peopling (especially with those from different cultures, communities, or different walks of life). Remember, ignorance can be pretty transparent in our spaces.
10) Practice healthy self-care. Social media can be treacherous waters. You’re your own best friend. Love yourself. If people are jerks, you can walk away. Their shit is on them, not you. Ask for help if you need it. We got you.
