Whatcha doin'? It's time for a news conference on New Mexico and #covid19. https://www.facebook.com/GovMLG/photos/a.2265811537078391/2729165367409670/?type=3&theater
"We aren't getting to many of the habits that will allow us to safely, slowly, correctly reopen ... to live with #COVID19," says @GovMLG right out of the gate. Here are today's new numbers with 207 new cases:
New Mexico is seeing another "uptick" of #covid19 cases with increases in every region over the last several days.
1,300 children have tested positive for #covid19 in New Mexico to date.
This is the "bad news slide" for the day, says Human Services Secretary David Scrase. The trend in the number of cases of #covid19 in New Mexico is going up.
The current rate of spread is 1.12 in the state, and that's below the target of 1.05 or less. It's one of three target gating criteria New Mexico is no longer meeting.
Four of Five regions are trending up since last week for rate of spread:
Human Services Secretary David Scrase says Texas is showing a fairly high case count along the panhandle and in El Paso and that people have traveled there and returned to New Mexico with #covid19.
Arizona's case curve is "an absolute disaster"
Today, New Mexico officials are talking about the states that border ours.
"We absolutely cannot afford to have the kind of results that Arizona and Texas are having since their reopening," says Dr. Scrase. Those cases are filling up ICU beds and endangering New Mexico. "Still, the best thing you can do is #StayAtHome ."
Nuggets about the neighborhood:
#StayAtHome is still in effect in New Mexico, says @GovMLG. "I think there is a false sense of security now by, frankly, most Americans." #covid19
"We cannot go back to school unless we manage this virus and the spread of this virus better...Do your part," says @GovMLG #WearAMask
"I need you to hear it again, because we are not doing it. New Mexicans have gotten really lax," says @GovMLG. That might lead to renewed closures. #stayathome #WearAMask It's a not political statement. It's a public health strategy.
New Mexico Phase 2 is on hold. That means, for now, the tentative changes on July 1 aren't on pace.
"Use your mask as your First Amendment declaration, but protect your fellow New Mexicans," says @GovMLG in today's public address. #WearAMask
Lt. Gov. Howie Morales says the plan in place—only a few days a week of in person, no assemblies, lots of monitoring—is aimed at keeping students and staff safe amid #covid19
Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists helped create 18 models that planning teams looked at to consider the schools strategy for New Mexico, says Dr. David Scrase.
The state's goal is to get back to full-time, in-classroom education as fast as possible, says @GovMLG
Is there different gating criteria for schools re-opening? Are kids going to get regular #covid19 test in school? @votergirl has a long list of questions. Answers, truncated, "In general, we try not to move the goal post." and kids will get screened vs. tested.
@fbihop asks: How many cases are directly linked to travel? All of them. "Remember that is how this started," says Dr. Scrase. But the journo was really asking about links to New Mexicans who brought virus home from border states in recent weeks. No data on that is on the ready.
Mask enforcement in the future could include "personal citations," if we can't manage to #WearADamnMask
Remember concerts and entertainment are in Phase 3. With Phase 2 now on hold, that's a long way off. #StayAtHome
"We are not going to make a decision about the November election until we have the data," but New Mexico needs to have more options for sovereign nation voters, says @GovMLG
"I am definitely going to see if we can limit the questions to just one per reporter." We really hope you are kidding @GovMLG @norasack. This is hard enough. #sunshine🌞
@GovMLG says she wants to make sure law enforcement agencies are accountable, but remember how no legislators introduced a bill about making police records of discipline open to the public? https://www.sfreporter.com/news/2020/06/22/no-reform-no-peace/
Question from @mckaydan: How real is the chance New Mexico imposes more strict regulations from earlier this spring? Answer: "I wish I had a crystal ball." (A direct quote, but you know there were a lot MORE WORDS from @GovMLG) #WearAMask #StayAtHome
New Mexican can't close its borders to travelers to other states per federal law, says @GovMLG but begs visitors to #WearAMask, prefers they don't come and that people who live here don't leave either. #StayAtHome
24% of New Mexico's positive #covid19 tests have been among those who do not have symptoms. #StayAtHome #WearAMask
