1/ As a state leader, you cannot hide from the virus.

What you can do is mandate masks, ramp up your testing, require symptomatic folks to isolate, and restrict large gatherings.

It has been 3 months since we launched http://covidexitstrategy.org  and here's what we're seeing.
2/ **Our goal is to surface the data on the ground, so state and local leaders can act.**

This work is a collaborative effort between volunteers from: @USDResponse, @USofCare, @ResolveTSL, and @DukeMargolis.

We are non-partisan. We've worked across the past two administrations.
3/ **Cases are surging in 14 states, some much worse than others**

AZ AR CA FL GA ID KS MI NV OK OR SC TN TX

The painful outliers are Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, & Texas.

New cases have more than doubled in the past 14 days.
4/ **These outliers are not testing enough to get a grasp of the true nature of how the virus is spreading**

12 of 14 are seeing their % of COVID+ cases increase. Only 4 of 14 are meeting the per capita baseline testing target.

Live in these states? Demand more testing.
5/ **As a country, we have to hit the 500K/day target, now we need to stretch to the 4M/day**

A baseline of 500K/day is needed to protect frontline workers and patients with symptoms. A higher target of 4M/day is needed to properly surveil the virus. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1275916401681694720
6/ **A state will know it is testing strategy is working when its % of COVID+ begins to decrease as it tests more**

You can see this illustrated by NY, NJ, CT, NM, and IL.
7/ **There are a number of ways to assess the burden on our health system. We recently added new cases and currently hospitalized**

These metrics are adjusted per capita, so you can compare states.

Keep an eye on: AZ SC TX NV CA LA GA. All states with rising hospitalizations.
8/ **States are doing poorly with respect to the guidance set by the WH and CDC**

This is a work in progress, but we've been trying to faithfully represent how the CDC is calculating its six "gating" indicators.

https://www.covidexitstrategy.org/cdc-gating-criteria

We'll pull this into the main site soon.
9/ **It is still shocking that only 12 states have state-wide mandated mask policy**

Just look at this chart. Ignore CA for a moment, since they only required masks this week.

See something in common? Decreasing cases. High testing. Low COVID+ rate.

😷
10/ **States rolling new and rolling back policies is like a multidimensional chess game**

The only way we keep up is because of:

http://www.covid19statepolicy.org

Which is run by @nwnancy, @BeaMagistro, @breebangjensen, and a team from @UW.
11/ I'm in awe of the people and organizations we are collaborating with.

Just this week the team at @USofCare released a handbook to help state leaders take action to prevent surges.

See the 5 actions to #ReOpenSafely here: https://twitter.com/USofCare/status/1273597700596957184
12/ The team at @ResolveTSL continues to produce critical public health guidance. From checklists on how to create safe, healthy workplaces to contact tracing strategies. https://preventepidemics.org/covid19/science/insights/
13/ The work we do would not be possible without the data and team behind @COVID19Tracking.

@EricTopol is right, we'd be flying blind without this public health treasure that @alexismadrigal, @kissane, @yayitsrob, and team maintain every single day. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1275928418341621760
14/ As always:

(1) Reach out to your state & community leaders and advocate for the actions they should be taking. (Like mandating masks 😷.

(2) If you see data that needs to be updated, tell us.

We can stop the spread together 💪🏾
