Definitive Jay Z album rankings: a thread
18.Everything is love

The highly anticipated album from the power couple, honestly I never thought they had much musical chemistry, was kind of awful to be honest

Favorite track:friends
17.collision course

The collaboration nobody asked for between Jigga and Linkin Park, nobody would’ve been mad if they made like a song a piece together for their respective albums individually

Favorite track: encore/numb
16.Unfinished business

The collaboration between heavyweights R kelly and Jay Z failed to live up to their blockbuster 1st album, had a couple cool tracks but it was a mess honestly

Favorite Track:big chips
15.magna carta holy grail

Expected a lot more prior to the release especially with all who was involved, but this was arguably Jay Z at his worst as an MC, production was incredible though.

Favorite Track: Oceans
14. Kingdom Come

Hov’s return from retirement, good amount of enjoyable tracks, you could hear the rust though, production was great per usual

Favorite track:Oh my God
13. Best of both worlds

Before WATTBA with Drake and Future, this collab paved the way for hitmakers from different worlds creating fun hits for the seasons, r kelly and Jay Z both did what they were both best at in this pretty enjoyable collab

Favorite track: Green light
12. The Blueprint 3

Many dont like this project, but it was the first album of Jay’s I heard in full growing up, great production and we see a 40 year old rapper construct hit after hit and get into different pockets

Favorite track: Forever Young
11. The Blueprint 2

The long runtime of the album plagues it from being ranked higher, the album consists of some of the legendary rapper’s best b sides

Favorite track: Blueprint 2
10. Watch the Throne

Grown flex raps personified, we heard some of the best production that will never be replicated, and perhaps the most grand collab to date between two hip hop heavyweights

Favorite track: the joy
9. 4:44

Another return to form for Jay after the disaster that was the predecessor to this album in MCHG, we hear Jay at his most mature and probably at his most focused in messaging

Favorite track: marcy me
8. Vol 2: Hard knock life

Although not the best of the volume series, this album still contained a mixture of hits and great b sides, also I believe its the most features we had on a Jay project, and it wasn’t suffocating or distracting to hear

Favorite track:Resovoir dogs
7. Dynasty Roc La Familia

Man the highs on this album are incredible, great showcasing of legendary MC Beanie Siegel, and we heard some of the deepest cuts to date from Jay himself

Favorite track: This can’t be life
6. Vol 3: Life and times of S Carter

This was Jay at his peak, rhyming, hitmaking, great hooks, great production. this was Jay as the biggest rapper in the world, the quintessential rap superstar album

Favorite track: so ghetto
5.American Gangster

This was Jay’s true return to form from brief retirement, the most thematic Jay album, rapping as he never left

Favorite track:ignorant shit
4. Vol 1: In My Lifetime

This is Jay’s peak as an MC, it holds many of his best songs and is only plagued by the fact it has 2 awful songs, this was his coming out party as the best rapper in the world

Favorite track: rhyme no more, imaginary players, streets is watching
3. The Black Album

Perhaps the most starstudded rap album production wise, this is Jay emulating his version of Carlito’s way and served as a great retirement album, before he inevitably returned like his basketball counterpart

Favorite track: Allure
2.The Blueprint

The biggest thing to happen on 9/11/2001, this was a hip hop master class. Whether it was the fact that every song was classic material lyrically, bink vs Ye vs Jus or the infamous nas diss, this was one of the most eventful albums ever

Ft: heart of the city
1. Reasonable Doubt

Every track is a classic, other than perhaps the illmatic, there has never been an introduction album this great, although I dont think he’s topped this, that isn’t a knock as classics came after it

Favorite track: d’evils, dead presidents 2,regrets
