LONG THREAD: Everyone I am likely going to hurt my career and probably some feelings here and I apologize for that, but I feel very strongly that this needs to be said. How can we even pretend to have a real conversation about how #RepresentationMatters without addressing
the fact that even people we love and admire need to be checked equally when they engage in problematic aspects of the industry. There have been several announcements recently by white actors playing POC characters and because we love them and admire them, nothing is said.
The fact is, #RepresentationMatters no matter what. If an actor or person you love, even if they are very far from being a racist or bad person, engages in something problematic, it’s not ok just because we like them. Nothing changes if even that is ok.
People who are white shouldn’t play POC characters. People who are Asian shouldn’t play black characters. That’s not representation either. That’s the same thing. People should also never do black, asian, or latin accents unless they ARE black, asian, or Latin.
It’s not funny or creative, it’s actually just hurtful and insulting. If you didn’t know a character was POC when you auditioned and you only find out when you book it TURN IT DOWN. Otherwise you’re just saying your career and income are more important than proper representation.
Don’t hate, don’t cancel, but don’t be silent either. Whether it’s something old or new CALL IT OUT. START A CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATION ABOUT IT. I don’t expect everyone to get it right every time. We’re all still learning and growing. Just talk and listen.
#RepresentationMatters
PS
If you feel called out by this at all, please feel free to reach out privately. I have no interest in dragging anyone through anything publicly and would be completely open to a constructive conversation in private.
Love to you all as always ♥️♥️♥️
