Will never cease to be surprised by how willing people are to just basically declare, "I'm ignorant!" on this website. https://twitter.com/insurgentspod/status/1276180346808209409
Yes, we should talk about the healthcare system in the context of the pandemic. Yes, the American healthcare system is a disaster. But, at the same time, disease spread/control is influenced by many factors that are unrelated to whether you have single-payer or some other system
I would far prefer the NHS to the U.S.'s healthcare system, for example. But the UK has *also* had a terrible response to coronavirus. As has Sweden. Similarly, the U.S. didn't have nearly the same issues w/ hospital capacity as Italy did. But I would prefer Italy's system to U.S
Ironically, Neera Tanden & CAP have advocated for a healthcare system similar to Germany's, a country which has not only had one of the best disease control responses in EU, but also maintained good hospital capacity. So much so that they took in Italian patients.
And, again, we should absolutely talk about our extremely flawed healthcare system in the context of COVID. But the questions of disease control/spread + hospital capacity are somewhat independent. Countries w/ far superior healthcare to ours have been overwhelmed.
