A thread of more things I've learned from running @MorningBrew's Twitter account
1/ Follower growth is not exponential

Morning Brew averages +330 followers a day

but on June 16 we gained +1,640

five days later? only +73

the quality/quantity of your tweets is the sole driver of follower rates, even when you're a "big" account
2/ Trust your audience

it was tempting to add "wrong answers only" to the tweet below

but I trusted the MB audience to figure it out

and used responses of our own to prod them in the right direction

trust=respect
3/ Build consistent franchises

First "what is everyone drinking" tweet:

26,514 impressions

Fifth "what is everyone drinking" tweet:

43,346 impressions

build out mini-franchises and be consistent
4/ Sometimes you have to put the work in

@nealfreyman and I started working on this meme a month before it was published

it didn't go uber-viral

but it elevated us beyond the noise of typical #fintwit meme accounts

and undeniably strengthens MB's voice on social
5/ Leverage your existing content
6/ How to use lists effectively

either tag 20 people or 3 people

nothing in between

20 gives you the proper engagement because you attract enough eyeballs from big accounts

3 allows people to actually follow those accounts

anything between 3 & 20 is just noise
7/ Leveraging lists cont.

a list of 3 should include:

1. Someone equal to or slightly bigger than you
2. Someone bigger still
3. One hail mary

The 1st will likely respond
The 2nd might respond because the 1st did
The 3rd you just never know
8/ Don't start a tweet with @

when you begin a tweet by @'ing someone, it doesn't show up on the broader timeline, only the person you tagged sees it

you can get around this by putting a . in front of the @

don't do that either

it looks bad

reword the tweet instead
9/ How to speed up meme creation

if you want to make a meme that follows a popular format

find the meme on imageflip

use their software to make it

then screenshot it to avoid account creation, payment, and time saving

made this Hertz meme in 25 seconds
10/ Spend a lot of time on Twitter

I found the format for the tweet below on K-Pop twitter

they were putting squirrel tails and cat ears on K-Pop stars

I just made it relevant for MB
