So people dunk on Alan Moore for creating Watchmen and think that he is this cynical bastard that writes cynical stories. First he is a cynical bastard. But he will be the first one to say that he wished Superheroes stayed optimistic how do I know? I read most of his work. https://twitter.com/Rageful_Tomato/status/1276240472512528386
So first people do with Alan Moore when they look at his mainstream DC work besides watchmen is look at the Killing Joke, which fine, but his favorite DC mythology? Is Superman. Like I'm not even kidding he called it the greatest mythology in comics.
He mostly wrote Wathcmen to prove that comics could tell any story and he doesn't hate superheroes so much as he hates the companies attached to them and wanting to do other things.
He also thought that he was a terrible Batman writer, not because of the Joker stuff but because while he could get into Superman's head he could not for Batman of all people so he focused on the villains. This is kind of a weird irony of the universe that I kind of laugh at.
Anyway when Alan Moore was given Supreme he was given what was essentially 90's Anti hero superman created by Rob Liefeld, at this point he was not that unique but what did Alan Moore do to him?
Supreme is now SILVER AGE SUPERMAN AND I'M GOING TO WRITE MY OWN SUPERMAN STORY! This one many people have not read but I would track it down.
At least the first arc, this run never concluded properly but the first arc still golden. It leaves on a good note. But this could be considered the prototype for all star superman and was Alan moore trying to bring back ideas to comics that were taken down or minimized.
I would read Supreme with Watchmen as a companion piece at least the story of the year but before you do maybe also read his Superman stories. because well they are kind of perfect?
I'm not joking for the Man who has eveyrthing I think should be taught before Wathcmen as a story in comics. This comic is tight, no far, all the emotion and a great fucking fight. This comic is close to a perfect single issue and ranks in my greatest.
Plus this is not even mentioning his work for ABC like Tom Strong, Promethea, or even 1963 like Watchmen is a cynical book but that was the point but Alan wanted more diversity in the types of stories comics could tell and that meant also OPTIMISTIC STORIES as well.
Anyway don't judge Moore entirely by his 80's work, he was trying to be different, and this is also true for his later works. I would recommend them as well. But yeah Moore is a better Superman writer and loved the character so much he nearly killed an editor to write these.
If you think I'm joking no, he put his hand to an editors neck when he was told superman was going to be rebooted and said if you don't let me write these your dead. I love Alan Moore but the guy is a crazy wizard man, but man guy can spin a yarn sometimes.
