Libertarianism is an ideology that should be attractive to most people; however, you will notice that libertarianism has struggled to gain any traction in minority (in my experience, black) communities. Ever wonder why? (Brain dump ahead)
Libertarianism is colorless. It holds that everyone owns themselves and are offered the same protections of rights for all people, yet you will often hear that libertarianism is for entitled white dudes. Where does this come from?
Well, if youâve ever gone to any libertarian gathering, you will notice that there is some truth to it being filled with a lot of white dudes. It doesnât have to be. So here are a few reasons I think brothers havenât gravitated to this movement:
1. Awareness. Most people donât even know libertarianism is a thing. They see a guy on the news once every 4 years that typically does a poor job of explaining what libertarianism is. In contrast, there are parties specifically catering their message to âblack issues.â
2. No free lunch. Many in the black community struggle to get by in the current structure (speaking from experience). The message of reducing what the government does comes off as putting the burden on people. In reality, the government doing it means the burden is on the....
The people (youâre taxed), you just wonât have a choice once itâs been decided whatâs to be done. For the time being, cost is subsidized but we seem to be neglecting that because these costs are subsidized by others and controlled by gov, efficiency and innovation are stunted.
3. Freedom of association. If you take it to itâs logical end, FOA means discrimination is allowed. When that has such a dark history, it seems impossible to think of a world where integration isnât forced. What if people wonât let me in their establishment or hire me?
How do we ensure that minorities arenât excluded from prosperity? Until there is a good answer to this, who would risk promoting an ideology that could potentially leave them on the outside? I believe we can have prosperity for all without coercion. How do we convince everyone?
