I have been doing some research for the past year and apparently older generations of white people who also lived on the sea islands called themselves Geechies because of their proximity to the Gullah and rice growing culture. I haven’t ever seen anyone use Geechee.
What’s in a name? Especially when it comes to food. Talking to @jilleeann_ about K*ffir limes, or when i think of the Geechie boy mill (and other companies that have used parts of Gullah culture), or places like Rebel Taqueria...(cont)
What does that mean for the people of the cultures being co-opted to use those products? As a chef, i want to try new ingredients, but i shouldn’t have to feel like I’mcontributing to the destruction of communities, especially my own. (Cont)
This isnt to say we shouldn’t think or act on these problematic names. It means that when people are looking to create a brand, or name, or image, THEY should be the ones thinking about how what they decide to call themselves or what they choose to use could and would be an issue
