One of the things I've been thinking about is how much the ongoing protests are a response to a *lack* of accountability at the polls. Pres lost popular vote, huge partisan imbalances in Congress and statehouses due to gerrymandering, naked voter suppression efforts... https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1276211281591230467
You've also got lawmakers who are *waaayy* more responsive to lobbyists and donors than to their constituents. The gap between what the public wants and what government actually does is growing wider and wider, with no recourse -- at some point it's going to become too much.
So when a lot of people here "the remedy is to vote," they don't believe it, and they don't have much reason to. Toppling a statue of a slaveowner might seem like the only way to make yourself heard.
