This is a really good article. I want to see the party hold to the centre on economics while being radical and making noise about core liberal issues where the Tories are awful and Labour equivocal. Haven't seen that from either candidate - will vote for the one who comes closest https://twitter.com/timfarron/status/1276144454123114504
I don't think there is political space to the left of this Labour party without going so far left that you lose the chance to win soft tories in, say, Winchester - Starmer is pretty left wing!
But Starmer is desperate to avoid talking about 'culture war' issues, and taking strong positions on those could enable us to peel some younger voters off Labour and start building back in urban areas.
It also answers the question 'what are we for' and gives us a chance of cutting through on the issues that best encapsulate our values, which is important for building up a core vote. It's also the right thing to do - unpopular causes need champions.
