The problem we have currently is that we rightly want to assert human equality, but have largely ditched the metaphysical framework in which this is an intelligible claim with a satisfactory justification.
So instead we try to pretend that human equality is an empirical fact. Unfortunately, however, this isn't the case; the grounds of equality are moral. But, we worry, if we abandon the empirical claim, we'll lose equality altogether. So we cling to it even when it's dubious.
