Abolish African-American from your vernacular.

It erases cultural ties Black people have to their respective ancestral homelands. Africa is a whole continent. Do you ever hear European-American?

It’s just another way to imply Black Americans aren’t fully American. Cancel it.
It’s well within the rights of certain Black Americans to consider themselves as descendants of Africans but to label an entire racial classification African-American when Caucasian Americans aren’t labeled European-American is an attempt to establish us as second class citizens.
Not every Black person in America is originally from Africa (which, again, is a whole continent; when is the last time you heard someone from Nigeria say “I’m from Africa”?). It’s a catch-all bucket for Haitian-Americans, Panamanian-Americans, Black Puerto-Ricans, etc, etc
My parents are from Haiti, I was born in Boston, though my ancestors were from Ivory Coast, Bénin, and Congo (the majority of the enslaved in Hispaniola came from West Africa) I’m Haitian-American. But above all I consider myself Black. With a capital B.
The Godfather (the Black one) said it best:

Say it loud, I’m Black and I’m proud.

If we can’t agree on anything else, hopefully we can agree that I’m African American and I’m proud just doesn’t sound nearly as correct. 🙃
