Making sure people can earn a livable income is one of the pillars in our community’s #endpoverty work. A living wage is part of that equation. A low minimum wage means the need to work more than full time in order to make ends meet. https://twitter.com/edmontonspc/status/1275829991628914696
This can be a losing proposition for low-income families, especially when childcare is a consideration. More hours of work means more childcare, which means a vicious circle of costs.
Even for single people earning less than a living wage, it means working more than full time hours just to cover their basic living expenses. This can trap people in poverty, as there’s no room left in people’s lives to retrain or take other steps to get ahead.
Earning less than a living wage traps people in poverty - not just because of the obvious. It closes doors on a better future because time and energy, and other resources, are finite.
