🧵 on actually shifting our priorities & the discussion over funding Cadet program for students. Many of my students were in cadet program- they’ll take the deal for free college to become a cop- even if it’s not what most wanted to do- but know what programs didn’t exist? 1/5 https://twitter.com/falcicchio/status/1276144826417897477
There was no “cadet” like program for my students who wanted to become teachers to get to go to college tuition free while they learned to be great teachers from local universities. That kind of investment would grow our own diverse teaching force that stays in the community. 2/5
Many of my students wanted to be social workers or psychologists. There was no “cadet” like program for them to go to a DC college to study social work or psychology if they committed to staying here i land working in that profession. That wasn’t an option. 3/5
Many of my students wanted to be nurses. There was no “cadet” like program that allows them to go to a DC college tuition free if they committed to becoming a nurse and serving in a high need area in the DC community. That wasn’t an option. 4/5
Cadet program was good for many of my students-but far more were interested in a different path of public service. If we exchange tuition for service in military & policing but not teaching or health- that shows our values. @MayorBowser @ChmnMendelson @charlesallen @cmdgrosso 5/5
