The teacher transfer window has closed, and it seems that fewer are moving schools this summer. @teachertapp and @schooldash have contributed to @gatsbyEd report on COVID-19 related disruption to the teacher recruitment market: https://www.gatsby.org.uk/education/latest/report-indicates-stimulus-required-to-prevent-teacher-recruitment-crisis (1/6)
There has been an estimated reduction of over 5,000 adverts for secondary jobs alone. We think contractions in primary sector are even larger. In the annual game of musical chairs, most teachers are staying put. https://www.gatsby.org.uk/education/latest/report-indicates-stimulus-required-to-prevent-teacher-recruitment-crisis (2/6)
Why so little teacher movement? Initial disruption due to reluctance to interview online has become self-sustaining. If schools fail to promote and appoint to senior jobs, these teachers, in turn, do not give notice in, so causing the dramatic falls in job adverts seen. (3/6)
Stability in teacher appointments is no bad thing. Compared to last year, more teachers are reporting that no teachers are leaving their school (primary) or department (secondary) this summer. Higher FSM schools disproportionately benefit from this greater stability. (4/6)
However, this lack of movement during the summer is likely to lead to larger movements at Christmas and Easter. This is incredibly difficult for heads to manage and for pupils to cope with. (5/6)
We believe newly qualified teachers are struggling to find first appointments simply because there are fewer vacancies. This cohort of new teachers *could* play a role in supporting schools experiencing ongoing staffing disruption from COVID-19.
