I’m at Columbus City Hall for @ColumbusCouncil’s police reform plans.
. @SG_Hardin says they’re after “radical change.” they’re announcing short term and long term plans.
Sort term plans:
1. Dropping no knock raids
2. hate group background checks for officers
3. Demilitarization of police including destroying inappropriate weapons
4. Civilian oversight of police... says public doesn’t have faith in division independent oversight needed.
. @SG_Hardin says they’re planning to have these done by the end of July.
After that, they’re planning to hold hearings, inviting the public to help @ColumbusCouncil “reimagine” public safety.
. @SG_Hardin describes changes as additive to safety commission recommendations.
Now up, @lizforus... says the goal should be figuring out how to keep “all residents safe” says current model not cutting it.
She says one thing Columbus can address quickly is changing @ColumbusPolice equipment... demilitarizatizing the division is something Brown brought up after Sunday’s clash downtown.

Planning finance hearing for 6/30 on police purchasing.
. @lizforus says they’ll push budget hearings earlier on the calendar this year to make changes.

Says councils need to be Pro-progress pro-change pro-civil rights.
Now up @RobDorans... says he’s heard form 1000s... more than any other issue while he’s been on council.

He’s talking about changing how Columbus investigates use of force.
Says @ColumbusCouncil will codify civilian review board in @MayorGinther’s executive order.

Dorans says they’ll be looking to safety commission findings to establish board.
. @CMEVRemy now addressing no knock warrants.

Describes how SWAT showed up at his newly purchased home looking for someone else. Worries what would happen if they had a no knock warrant.
Closing out, @sdfavor...

Says she has three young family members and says worries every new hashtag could be one of them.
. @sdfavor says talking about race is uncomfortable, but Black Americans have been uncomfortable for a long time.

Says the irony of people protesting police brutality being subject to police brutality is unacceptable.
She says two things can be true:

There can be great public servants in uniform, and the US criminal justice system can be fundamentally discriminatory.
Now @sdfavor is talking about reallocation of city spending...

“Violent crime rates decreased when money was shifted to housing” she says.
The truth is, @sdfavor says, the rules weren’t written to benefit all of us.
My mistake! Priscilla Tyson is attending remotely... still haven’t heard from Mitchell Brown. He may be coming up in a second too.
@PriscillaTyson is talking about passing legislation earlier this month declaring racism a public health crisis.
. @PriscillaTyson says she’ll look through funding decisions moving forward through the lens of racial equity.
Yep, now up is Mitchell Brown.
M. Brown voices support for @ChiefQuinlan and the @ColumbusPolice. Says many have a “true calling” for provide safety.

BUT there are those who aren’t living up to those standards. Says independent review and accountability is needed.
M. Brown says he’ll focus on how the division can better respond to issues of addiction and substance abuse.
He says he’s experienced police racism and he’s protested against it. Commits to ongoing challenge of improving the division.
. @SG_Hardin says he keeps hearing from ppl asking when we’ll go back to normal. He says “I hope we don’t.”
