You can't claim these monuments represent heritage and then be surprised when those that history oppressed see them AS symbols of exclusion.

You can't claim your society includes all equally when the town square is filled by reminders representing ONLY the history of a few.

If it's about history and the forgetting of it, "heritage" as you say, then these symbols belong in a museum where they might educate and remind us of that past IN CONTEXT and surrounded by supporting material, not glorifying one ideology's view of history in the town square.

Heritage isn't a statue.

History isn't a single human being.

The narrative of our past is complex. It is millions of people of all ideologies and all races and all stations and all struggles and if it's HISTORY you're worried about, then you must tell the whole story.

If you care more about a bird shit covered block of bronze in the likeness of some long dead general who took up arms against this nation than you do about the people living NOW, well, you know, you just might be the whole goddamn problem with our history.
