Throughout history, medical personnel have played a key role in the Royal Navy, serving in both combat situations and humanitarian crises.
Captain Taylor (pictured below) recollects the very different requirements for her nurses in Saudi Arabia where they were dealing with a humanitarian emergency rather than a war situation.
She recalls the need for staff to understand the different cultural requirements of Islam and that staff needed to be prepared to deal with thousands of people who would not necessarily be co-operative.
Today is no different, the nursing branch of the Royal Navy is called Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service (QARNNS). Their nurses work worldwide, both on shore or at the scene of a natural disaster.
They help to provide essential primary and secondary care. During the Covid-19 pandemic they are helping fight the virus on the front lines in our hospitals.
