talked to some parents of younger children the other day and I feel like it’s not being adequately discussed how much the pandemic is affecting children. we talk all day about the economy, but a generation of furious kids? no.
my wife and I work. I technically work two jobs. consistent, structured homeschooling is impossible. unmonitored zoom sessions with educators isn’t a reality until they’re 11 or 12, I reckon. we say they can watch these screens, but not THESE screens, or at least not as much.
and who are the people enforcing these random, inconsistent rules, day in and day out? it’s us. their parents. the only people they ever see.
you’re in jail with your mom and dad, only they’re more demanding and judgmental than ever before.

so, yeah. the oldest one kind of hates us, all the time. he’s mad, all the time. he never gets to see anyone else, ever. he’s got screens, books, legos, and bike riding - and that’s it. I’d be pissed, too.
I know we’re lucky to have jobs and find ourselves in a place of some security. which makes me feel even worse, because it makes me aware that the hobbled together horseshit we’re doing is actually a luxury.
quit talking about the goddamned economy. talk about stopping the virus, making communities safe, and getting kids back in school. because the longer we live like this, the worse the future’s going to be.
