So I’ve stayed fairly quiet over the last few weeks, so that I could listen to the ideas presented about changing police (defund). But when I see repeated false information (just like in education) I have to speak up.
The first thing I’m going to talk about is overtime. I have seen a lot of things about Capping overtime. Police officers don’t choose to work overtime. Many departments don’t allow it at all and make you take hours off of another day to compensate. The reason that LEOs
Have overtime is because they are helping a community or answering a call. Sometimes they don’t realize answering a call with an hour or more left in their shift will last until well after their shift is over. And I can’t imagine people in need would be okay with a LEO
Just being like well I’m done here another LEO will be by shortly for you to start over with/ talk to. This issue further gets challenged by the ideals presented in the defund movement. Because if there are less officers, another officer might not be available to answer the call.
Departments have shifts called early units. These units (usually 3-4 people within a squad) start their shift an hour earlier than the rest of their squad. The idea is to assist with the transition. For ex: if a squad’s shift ends at 7 am. A few members from the next squad
Will start at 6 to help pick up any new calls to help the cops that are ending their shift not start something that would lead to overtime because again. It’s not something that is really allowed. I agree that police aren’t perfect and they should be punished for their actions.
I also believe that they should do more in the community to educate and discuss. They should Show where the money goes and what they are doing to answer the protests. I will also admit that communication within any government “funded” organization isn’t spectacular.
Education has always been the shining example of this lack of communication and through the times of the virus, this has only become more true. But having a dialogue is the true start to any change.
I do understand the fear and pain associated with officers for minority groups and I want justice and peace for all those that have been mistreated by “people wearing the badge.” I will state and I will continue to state that the actions
Committed by the “officers” with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others are not respecting the oath nor the badge. They are evil people that take a position that they deem has power in order to belittle/cause harm to people they refuse to see as their equal.
And I believe that they should be arrested and face a jury of the families of the innocent men and women they have harmed/killed.
But I will also ask for something else. And I’m sorry if this plea upsets you. But please read up on where your tax dollars go. Converse with your local officers. Ask them their thoughts on what is happening. The answers might surprise you. But also ask the following:
Ask them what training they have because many have trainings once a month on a variety of the issues people want addressed. Ask them how you can help bring change. Maybe there is a group you can specifically talk to to bring change instead of just posting to social media.
Ask them about their job. What they do & what changes they wish to see because I promise you they want changes too. (Just like teachers want change to education policy) and ask them how they feel about the lives their “fellow officers” took.
You might realize more are with you than against you.
