You may know George Washington Carver as one of America’s great agricultural scientists, but are you familiar with his conservation legacy?

#EarthOptimism
Carver highlighted the need for agriculture to be intertwined with ecology. He sought to encourage sustainable farming practices, move nature education outside the classroom, and improve the livelihoods and economic security of poor Black farmers in the South.
Carver championed crop rotation and natural fertilization. He was concerned with reducing erosion of the topsoil and highlighted the importance of forest preservation in providing rich nutrients to that topsoil.
Carver produced a series of how-to bulletins that provided information on sustainable farming and nutrition. These bulletins focused on crops that were edible, marketable, and contributed to healthy soil.
