Huge amount of #dust from #Sahara flying over the Atlantic Ocean! The area of the dust is about 15.5 million km². That is more than 1.5 times the area of the USA 🇺🇸, or Canada 🇨🇦, or China 🇨🇳, and almost as large as Russia 🇷🇺! But how much dust is flying there? Thread 👇 1/7
Based on NASA's GEOS-FP analysis the mass of the Saharan dust is about 16 million tons (16 000 000 000 kg ≈ 35 000 000 000 lbs). 2/7
With trucks that carry 40 metric tons of dust it would make about 65 000 truckloads!!! 3/7
If a single truck would be 20 meters long, with only a one meter space between the trucks it would make 1365 km (~850 miles) line of trucks. 4/7
The line of trucks would therefore not fit to the road from Paris to Berlin (~1 050 km), or from Chicago to New York City (~1 270 km). 5/7
Thinking about the proportions of the dust here, I cannot imagine how much of dust there is still left in Sahara! 6/7
The satellite image and analysis data correspond to 24 June 2020 (estimated amount of dust at 17:00 UTC). Have a nice day everyone! ☀️ 7/7
