My first thread on #AcademicTwitter - gonna be a long one (sorry!) I don’t normally discuss my personal experiences much on here but today, I feel it’s appropriate
Quick word on accusations of misogyny: I’ve had some unfortunate interactions over my whole working life. I’ve also had some times when I’ve been made to feel uncomfortable, got at and vulnerable as an ECR. Sometimes this has been by other women, other self proclaimed feminists
Contrastingly, some male colleagues have reached out to reassure me when I seem down, & actually seemed genuinely concerned about what was wrong. Don’t want to embarrass anyone but given recent discussions, thought I should name @CraigKelly90 as one. That’s supporting women imo
This isn’t to say that there isn’t misogyny in academia or that I haven’t had some fantastic support from fellow feminists but it isn’t all as clear cut as lazy stereotypes may suggest.
As a feminist and an EC academic, I’d like to inspire the young women I teach by fighting for equality, rather than always characterising myself by what I’m against. It also means having braver conversations about the complexities of the social dynamics within academia.
Anyway that’s my 2 cents worth. It’s no more: Men=lazy and insensitive, Women=put upon and virtuous, than: Women= oversensitive harridans and Men=victims of ‘PC culture’. We can’t oversimplify these things! Please do comment if you don’t agree (or RT if you do) needs discussing
