I’d like to nudge this conversation further. What about when black students are being targeted or harassed by adults in school? What do white parents teach their kids to do to help? (It absolutely happens. I’ve not only witnessed it but have had to step in on numerous occasions) https://twitter.com/korytellers/status/1275400650638135296
I started having the “school talk” with my son in middle school as certain teachers abused their power to literally emotionally abuse him which leap frogged to admins. Some started the same mess with Braeden. We had to teach them, “When your head is in the lion’s mouth, be still”
Speaking up for themselves was a huge no no and they had to learn that being black meant just taking it, keeping emotions in check and doing whatever was necessary so that their oppressors could not win. It’s not just policing folks. It’s within systems, hence systemic racism
It’s hard to raise strong young black kids to use their voices when they have to grow up in systems where they aren’t allowed to have one. That said, I imagine that after this summer, it’ll be much harder to hold kids back from self advocating so please do better school folks
By the way...My son was told by his 5th grade teacher that he’d end up in jail before he was 16. The school did nothing. I’d say that as you’re learning how to be anti-racist, you should start with eliminating racist adults in your systems. Just a thought
One last thing, this was not me bashing educators before people start crying in my DMs again. This is a reality for many students of color and like it or not, it must be faced alongside all of the dismantling of terribly white washed curriculum
