#한국전쟁 #KoreanWar #KoreanWar70Years
On 25 July 1950 North Korea's Kim Il Sung (grandfather of #KimJongUn) invaded the South in an attempt to reunify the peninsula by force. By 1 October 1950, #UNCommand (forces from #US #SouthKorea & total 15 other states) invaded North Korea.
Seizure of territories North & South of the 38th parallel went back & forth. The #ForgottenWar "ended" on 27 July 1953 with an armistice that Chinese, NKorean & US/UNC representatives signed.
The war cemented the previous division, establishing the "Demilitarized" Zone.
Both Koreas remain in a state of war; few inter-Korean moments of détente in 1972, 1991/92, 1998-2008.
Some viewed the 2018 Military Agreement as a de facto non-aggression pact; live-fire drills stopped, guards post removed, parts demilitarized, landmines & war remains recovered.
Since 2019, however, #NorthKorea ignores #SouthKorea calls for continuing military talks, joint mine-sweeping, war remains recovery. #Pyongyang resumed military drills, testing of short-range missiles, artillery, etc - breaching tension-reduction spirit of the military agreement.
On 17 June 2020, the NKorean military threatened re-installment of guard posts, troop deployments to Kaesong Industrial Complex & Kumgangsan Tourist Area, training along the DMZ & NLL.
On 24 June 2020, these plans were "put on hold" & "some" actions suspended. Just in time.
Demise of all 2018 achievements (military & political), #KimYoJong personal insults of #MoonJaeIn, media-effective destruction of #Kaesong liaison office - #Pyongyang brinkmanship literally burnt all bridges. Let's hope actual military escalations remain absent. #평화 #기억하라.
