1/6 I am so glad I have an IT tech as a fiance - apparently #virginmediadown but we are in Surrey and have no issues whatsoever and full speeds too (he runs the box in modem only mode and we have a different router) - anyway since then we've had fewer outages - this is how:
2/6 This does involve buying a new Home router and adding an extra piece of equipment to their household.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Next-Gen-Gigabit-Wireless-2402Mbps/dp/B083QK8HT2 There is a slight cost but the home networking improvements are beautiful. Get yourself a TP Link Archer AX50 router.
3/6 Set the Virgin Hub into Modem only mode, by going to 192.168.0.1 and following these instructions
https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-configure-advanced-settings-on-your-hub
Once there, this will change the default IP address to something else, but we don’t need to worry about that now.
4/6 Plug in the new router to the Virgin hub via the “WAN port” on the AX50
it will then take people through initial setup – (auto is normally the best method to use)
it will ask you to set a WIFI Name and password – and change the admin credentials.
5/6 Once done people will enjoy a much more stable virgin connection with stronger and faster Wi-Fi in the home. (as long as they remember to disable the “smart connect” feature in the Wi-Fi settings!)
6/6 Just a quick note that if you do have an issue they won't be able to run diagnostic testing until you take it out of modem mode.

This was sent to me from him via email - thank @Metal_kitty_
