Ok. I need to say something about the ABC and regional Australia. I grew up in Tassie where my dad was a footy coach and for my whole childhood I spent Saturdays listening to ABC analysis of the local footy on the radio. Even when I was studying for my HSC I listened at home 1/
I left Tassie for Uni “on the mainland” and worked in Adelaide briefly before working in Kempsey NSW and joining @ABCRural where I spent some of the best years of my life in Lismore and back in Launceston before taking on the Country Hour presenter role in Victoria
I met my husband @williereid who was also an @ABCRural reporter having been a jackeroo in the NT and Western Qld and worked at The Land newspaper. Together we decided to take on the world.
We have since lived and worked in Johannesburg, then Darwin, where our daughter Pearl was born, and Rowan was the manager of radio, then Cambodia, Thailand and the United States.
Every moment of my working life has been informed by my Tassie upbringing, my time in regional and rural Australia. I often say that being a foreign correspondent is very similar to being a reporter for @ABCRural
It’s about field reporting, adaptability, problem solving and the capacity to be real and to talk to real people and help tell their stories. These are the strengths of @abcnews To suggest otherwise is to either ignore or avoid an understanding of what we do.
