In 2016, Bihar announced the statewide prohibition of alcohol. Almost a hundred (96) years post witnessing the biggest example of state-imposed prohibition in the world which happened through the eighteenth amendment in the United States, this step was consequential. 1/12
In the US, prohibition directly led to a parallel economy, followed by an increase in crimes and the rise of mafias which continued for decades even after the ban was lifted. 2/12
Initially, the Bihar government was so stringent that even homoeopathic medicine shops had to be closed down for a while. People started dying due to the intake of illegal country liquor while many ended up in poorly run de-addiction centres. 3/12
Post 2005, due to the dependency of the state on large chunk of tax revenue from liquor, it was widely given a free pass and liquor shops mushroomed in every nook and corner of the state. 4/12
