serious thread time with nerd, topic: trans representation in media.

*BEGIN*

there has been a sharp increase in trans representation in media on netflix and such in the last 5-6 years due to the prominent lgbt community having influence over ratings and such
so typically, people making shows and such would like to try to appeal to those people so they can get a good image (makes sense), but as of right now, this is still a sloppy concept due to media mainly using mostly only transgender women who have finished transitioning
there is of course media that involves transgender men, non binary folk and shows that go deep into sexuality. It's just that most media are scared of going beyond "transgender woman who looks like a woman because she completed her HRT"
but there is barely any media of these people even going through the actual transitioning process, it's clear that this area of relatability has yet to be explored for people making movies, games and shows. Which I think should change for a couple of reasons:
1. Due to the sharp increase of people coming out as transgender and those still figuring out who they are, it would make sense for media to try and focus on characters going through the transitioning process. The end result of transitioning is always nice to see, but there is-
no real character development to go along with it other than "they are transgender," you can at least try to make a plot that shows the individual going through the process. This would result in a new wave of lgbt folk feeling comfortable with my proposed media existing due to-
the media actually having an understanding of how it feels to be going through the transitioning process, along with reassurance that says "we know, we're here for you."
2. This is normally said but trans men and non binary folk do not have much trans representation in media, i'm pretty sure non binary folk get more than trans men because "no gender" is interesting for some i guess lol.

This can of course be fixed through more media including-
trans men and non binary folk, it's just that they should do more advertising either by ads or by big names like Netflix and Hulu
3. The most important part for a piece of media is a story that makes them remember it well, if you want to try and dip your toes (uwu) into the waters of trans representation then make sure to consider what has been done and what hasn't been done already
it doesn't hurt to give trans women more representation of course, but they should not be a sole focus for you as you now have a big name in the lgbt community and have to live up to it by making many lgbt characters
it can be very easy to fuck up on parts (like the pansexual scene in big mouth) due to certain "rules" on what you can/can't say due to what people online say, so just keep it simple with a basic understanding of transgender folk have to go through and you have a relatable plot.
I've finished the listing now lol, guess i should wrap it up before people get bored.

These are obviously issues discussed before, but I felt like it was important to try and identify where these issues come from so people in the future can spread the word on what they want
For those making movies/games. Be sure to make polls to ask people what they want and don't want in lgbt representation before diving into stuff, it will save you time, your movie being invalidated and it will give you the knowledge to continue giving the right representation.
