Seems there's a debate on whether or not black cartoon characters should be played by black actors. I'll say this, more diversity in the VA field is only a good thing, however, voice acting is the one kind of acting where skin color truly does not matter, and that's important
It's important that a black guy could voice Samurai Jack, and that a hispanic guy could voice Rocco, or that men could voice 2 of the 3 leading women in Bob's Burgers. The best thing about voice acting is that it comes down 100 percent to what you can bring to the table
And yes, I 100% support people of other races voicing white characters. Kevin Michael Richardson, Cree Summers, Phil Lamarr, possibly the 3 most well known black VA's, and they've all voiced white characters at some point in the past, but I would never ask that those voices be...
recast, because they were all perfect for those roles. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that whitewashing is an issue, and if Jenny Slate personally feels that stepping down is the right thing to do, then I see no reason to attack her for it. What I'm saying is...
we shouldn't attack white VA's who play characters of other races. When we tell Hank Azaria that he can't voice Apu anymore, you're saying that voice acting should suffer the same limitations as regular acting, which would mean all white characters be voiced by white voice actors
and while diversity in cartoons is an issue that's getting fixed over time, the fact is that in animation, there are still more predominant white characters than any other race, and by forcing people to voice within their own race, you're ensuring that none of those positions...
