We’ve been talking about the further support charities need from Government, this is one idea that can really make a difference - potentially up to £450m for charities.

Really pleased to have worked with colleagues on this new proposal, and here’s why I think it can work... https://twitter.com/IoFtweets/status/1276062626678800384
2. Charities need a boost to their income to help mitigate the huge drop off that has happened form trading and postponed fundraising activity. A change to Gift Aid so that every donation is work 33% rather than 25% will mean every eligible donation goes further
3. It makes for a great fundraising ask. It gives charities the opportunity to go back to supporters and ask for Gift Aid. It can help get more people giving, and people giving more. People have responded to emergency appeals - let's make that support worth even more
4. Government have been keen to offer match funding so far – for the National Emergencies Trust and #TheBigNightIn. They know it works, so let’s get it working even better for all donations for all charities through Gift Aid
5. It would also get cash to charities quickly and easily. There have been problems distributing the grants out so far. We don’t need to set up anything new – charities can use the existing system and the cash would be in the bank accounts in days.
6. The systems are in place and it’s worked before. Back in 2008 there was Gift Aid Transitional Relief which changed the amount charities could get (because of tax rate changes). So, this can be done with relatively little fuss, it’s ‘oven ready’ to coin a phrase.
7. The package we’re calling for will also benefit small charities (we want to see the levels raised on Small Donations Scheme) and need to make sure that other charities that serve diverse communities across the UK can access the schemes too.
8. The NAO estimates that approximately £560m of eligible Gift Aid is not claimed each year. That is money that should and could be going to charities - so changing the rate of Gift Aid through emergency relief would get charities the kind of cash they could be getting anyway
9. Lots of good reasons I think to take this forward. Charities need something more than the previous £750m package. #GiftAidRelief can’t solve all the problems – but it can play a role – and I hope Government take it forward at a time it's #NeverMoreNeeded
10. And lastly, been great to work with other sector bodies on this – thanks to @rhodridavies @richardsagar Ashleigh Milson @CAF, @paulwinyard and Richard Bray & Chris Lane @CharityTaxGroup for the work and Zoom meetings in putting it together.
