Some of the things I have learned the hard way in politics.
1 You are not elected to make easy decisions.
2 No matter what you do some people will intensely dislike you, that's ok and you need to learn to live with it.

2 No matter what you do some people will intensely dislike you, that's ok and you need to learn to live with it.
3 Remember why you went into it, did you want to make a difference? Make your community better? Then stay focussed and dont be distracted.
4 Dont get caught up on online arguments, that isnt democracy, thats public entertainment.

5 Its hard on family, talk to them before you stand and explain some of the pressures of public life so they know what's coming.
6 Dont take political attacks personally, if you do it will mentally destroy you.
7 Listen to all sides, even if you dont agree.

8 Its ok to make a mistake, your a human, not a machine. The important thing is to own it.
9 If you never change your mind on something then your not really listening and learning.

11 Remind yourself frequently that you are privileged to be in the position you are in, you have an opportunity and you have only 1 term, anything else is, again, a privilege.

We need to be open and honest with prospective candidates to prepare them, we need more people from diverse backgrounds to come forward and we need to equip them and support them properly.
Being a councillor is an incredible opportunity, do it, it's amazing.
