THREAD: GETTING STARTED WITH SPORTS CARD INVESTING

Now I know you all have seen sports cards selling for crazy amounts of money. There’s even a $500,000 bounty out for a Zion 1/1. Well here’s how you can get started in this booming market.
PICK A SPORT

Basketball, baseball, and football are the three I recommend to start out with as they’re more popular in sports cards. But soccer and hockey are good too. I personally focus basketball and baseball.
RESEARCH

What cards are popular? Learn about sets, parallels, refractors, autograph/patch cards. What causes the price to increase/drop? Graded vs ungraded cards?
Join Facebook groups, IG, attend card shows, read forums. There’s a lot of real-time information in these communities and they’re a great place to ask questions and see what cards other people are looking into as well.
One forum I recommend is Blowout Cards, easily one of the best sources for cards and information https://www.blowoutforums.com
STRATEGIES

Long term hold. Short term flipping. Grading for profit. These are all investment strategies I use. I would start off short term flipping to gain capital to eventually invest in higher end cards.
FLIP EXAMPLE

ESPN announced the MJ documentary ‘The Last Dance’. Sports card investors went and stocked up on MJ, Pippen, Rodman anticipating an increase upon the docs release. Well those cards skyrocketed once the documentary released and investors saw great returns on sales.
In sports cards, you always make money on the buy, always search for value! Look into charting sales data, tools are becoming more and more available for this
WHERE TO BUY/SELL

eBay will be your biggest marketplace for sports cards and will have the most up to date sales data. You can also use Facebook, IG, and other sites to buy/sell. As well as be a dealer at a card show
I know this is a very basic thread. I had to stop myself from diving into low level details that you will likely find in your research fairly easily. But feel free to reach out with questions.
