Dear newsroom managers: Thanks for reaching out, but I have no interest whatsoever in filling a position you've created to paper over the diversity issues that your shop has spent years avoiding or ignoring altogether.
I'm in no way shading friends and colleagues who hold such positions, or the important and valuable work they do. Also, there are people who will want the challenge and opportunity. Hire them. Support them.
Despite what you may have heard, there's no shortage of reporters of color who can ably fill these or any other open positions in your newsroom. We are, as they say, out here.
But I'm good. I've no interest in being tokenized or shouldering coverage of something that should be the entire publication's aim and responsibility.
I submit to you that reporting about and for diverse communities should not be a specialty in your newsroom. It should be normalized across your organization.
