Hi guys. This thread is meant to address some misinformation concerning the current happening in some parts of Ghana, supposedly an earthquake. First of all, it isn’t an earthquake please. Per the descriptions I’ve had from people who experienced it, it is likely a tremor.
In simple terms, the vibration should be of a certain magnitude and intensity over geologic fault systems, epicentre, with some impact to be termed an earthquake. As it stands we have no idea the magnitude or intensity of that “shake” yet to confidently say Ei earthquake oo.
Truth be told southern Ghana is seismically active, south east more vulnerable to earthquake or tremors and Ghana has a history of earth tremors and an earthquake. Our seismicity is associated with active faulting; the NW-SE Ivory Coast fault systems, EW fault along the coast and
The NE-SW Akuapem fault. EW coastal fault runs from sekondi across keta; NE-SW from south of Senya Beraku through Weija, Legon Hills, defining the EW fault system along Akuapim range. In fact the NE-SW and EW faults intersect at Weija whiles the NW-SE and EW intersect around axim
So towns within these areas are likely to feel tremors but the south eastern part more as they are more seismically active. Saying this, I’m sure you can appreciate why people in Kumasi or BA or northern region aren’t experiencing what some parts of Accra felt.
This is why people are advised not to build around such areas🌚. Even if we’ll build, we have to follow strict building protocols , I mean be prepared for the worst should it happen. Education , anticipation and informing are best mitigation ways so share to inform others
Hopefully the geological survey of Ghana will come up with more detailed information. This is only a final year geological engineering student’s contribution to bring calm 😅. Please do not panic at all. Thank you.
And oh if our fault systems are linked to the earthquakes recorded at other countries today it could be a reason we felt the tremors. I haven’t deduced the link yet so I can’t say it is, but just saying if you get me. Lol. Thanks.
Please before you come in with “you are wrong, read” etc, let’s not ignore the part I said let’s wait for detailed information from our department. I’m only educating about earthquakes and tremors, stating likely, what we felt is. GSD will do a better job concerning this. Thanks
Update, kindly take note.
