The Biggest Mistake Newbies Make When Starting Their Career In Digital Marketing

A mouthful and a thread for newbies.
#30DaysofThreads
Ever agree to take someone somewhere, but once y’all start driving, they wanna pick up some liquor at point B and make you wait while they do only-God-knows-what at point C 🙄 ...all for the $0 in gas $ they gave you?
That's probably what you'll feel like if you take the job as a "Digital Marketer" for your 1st gig. Actually, taking THAT job is the biggest mistake made by newbies because they don't know that means they'll do ALL the things & the pay won't add up.
Peep the graphic. Digital Marketing is actually an umbrella term for almost all online marketing activities. These are SOME of those activities, and each has their own list of career titles & focus
So, if you REALLY just want to do social media marketing, just focus on finding a job with that title or something very close. Or maybe you actually want to REALLY focus on email marketing? Same concept. Get familiar with what's expected in specific roles
Now I know someone is probably thinking: BuT yOu NeEd ExPeRiEnCe In AlL oF iT. No shit Sherlock. However, a general sense is more than enough. Just take Google's free cert to get the gist and save yourself the headache!
So how do we fix/avoid this?
1. RESEARCH. Find companies who have ESTABLISHED online marketing departments + people working with the job title you want. Agencies + Glassdoor are a great place to start looking for these + compiling a list for reference.
2. Avoid new roles. Not NEW openings, but when a company says something like “we’re ready to start growing our online marketing department” or “this is a new & exciting role within our company”...tread lightly
Why? New roles (especially outside of marketing agencies) may have the general job description of a "digital marketer", but give it a title like Content Coordinator. But you won't know that if you skip #1 + refer back to the driving analogy above.
3: Be upfront about your abilities when seeking freelance opportunities. Again, go back to #1. If you do that well, then you can properly solicit the right services and quickly build a portfolio that showcases the right stuff for career growth.
