There are many of the usual callow, shameless, suspects signing that letter, but there are others who I did once greatly respect.
As an aside, I know career diplomats with deep China expertise have long been dismayed at the naïveté and embarrassingly amateur tactics (there's no strategy!) of Canadian corporate and political elites, when it comes to Beijing.
Canada has an informal policy of not negotiating with kidnappers for several sound reasons. If we all agree it's a stupid thing to do with ISIS, why do we think it's ok with the PRC?
But, in the Laurentian echo-chamber (in which I freely admit I can often be found) this sort of asinine, short-sighted, self-defeating appeasement is seen as "sophisticated reasoning" and "pragmatic realism" and met with lots of knowing nods.
